Executive Mentoring and Coaching · Ignite

This is the work closest to my heart

I help leaders shift the beliefs that quietly hold them back. Through honest coaching, you come through your challenges clearer, steadier and more certain of yourself. Optimism is a skill. We train it.

What Ignite actually is

Coaching built on one belief: optimism is a skill that can be trained

Most executive coaching focuses on what you do. Ignite focuses on how you think. The beliefs a leader carries about themselves, about setbacks, about what is possible, shape every decision they make and every team they build.

The Ignite programme works with leaders to surface those beliefs, challenge the ones that are quietly limiting them, and build the mental habits of optimism, resilience and confidence that high-performing leadership actually requires.

This is not motivational coaching. It is honest, sometimes uncomfortable, and always practical. The goal is not to feel better. It is to lead better, make clearer decisions and build teams that perform because they want to, not because they have to.

I have spent a career working alongside leaders in high-pressure situations. The patterns I have seen most often are not about strategy or skill. They are about belief.

The beliefs Ignite works with

Limiting belief "I am not sure I am the right person to lead this business through what is coming."
Limiting belief "If I show uncertainty, my team will lose confidence in me."
Limiting belief "I have tried everything. I do not know what to do next."
Limiting belief "I am carrying this alone and I cannot show how heavy it is."
What Ignite covers

Four pillars of the Ignite programme

Every engagement is shaped around the leader and the moment they are in. These are the four areas the programme consistently works through.

01

Belief and mindset

Surfacing and challenging the beliefs that are quietly shaping your decisions and your leadership. Building the mental habits of optimism, resilience and self-certainty that high performance requires.

02

Clarity and decision-making

When pressure is high, clarity is the first thing to go. Ignite builds the habits and the structure that keep your thinking clear when the stakes are highest and the options are least obvious.

03

Leadership presence and influence

How you show up in a room, how you communicate under pressure, how you build trust with a team that is watching you closely. Presence is learnable, and it changes everything.

04

Resilience and recovery

How you meet a setback determines how your team meets one. Ignite builds the specific habits that allow leaders to absorb difficulty, recover quickly and come back steadier than before.

Why Ignite is different

Honest coaching from someone who has led businesses, not just coached them

I am not a professional coach who has read about leadership. I am a Chartered Accountant CA(SA) who has spent a career building businesses, sitting in leadership teams, navigating turnarounds and watching what separates leaders who grow from leaders who plateau.

That experience is what makes Ignite different. The coaching is grounded in commercial reality, not theory. When I challenge a belief, it is because I have seen what happens when it goes unchallenged in a real business, under real pressure, with real stakes.

Not motivational, honest

No cheerleading, no affirmations. Honest reflection on where the real limitations are and what it takes to move past them.

Not generic, tailored

Every Ignite engagement is shaped around the specific leader, the specific moment and the specific challenges they are carrying right now.

Not theoretical, commercial

The coaching is always connected to real business outcomes. Better leadership produces better decisions, better teams and better results.

Not one-off, ongoing

Leadership development is not a workshop. Ignite is an ongoing relationship that evolves as the leader and the business evolve.

Who this is for

The right fit for Ignite

Ignite is for leaders who are ready to look honestly at what is holding them back.

Business owners carrying it alone

You are the decision-maker, the standard-bearer and often the shock absorber for everyone around you. Ignite gives you a space to think clearly and honestly that you do not have anywhere else.

Leaders in transition

Moving into a bigger role, inheriting a team, taking on more than you have before. The skills that got you here are not always the ones you need next.

Leaders who have hit a wall

You are capable and experienced, but something is not working. The problem is usually not what you are doing. It is a belief that is quietly shaping how you are doing it.

Leaders building high-performing teams

Team performance is a function of leadership. If the team is underperforming, the coaching often needs to start at the top, not in the team itself.

Leaders navigating significant pressure

A difficult market, a business turnaround, a major decision. High-pressure moments are when beliefs either hold you steady or quietly derail you. Ignite is built for those moments.

Leaders based across South Africa

I am based in Stellenbosch and work with leaders across Gauteng, the Western Cape and South Africa. Ignite engagements work effectively in person or remotely.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What does an Ignite engagement look like in practice?

It starts with a conversation about where you are and what you are carrying. From there, the engagement is structured around regular sessions, typically monthly or fortnightly, focused on the specific beliefs, decisions and leadership challenges you are working through. The format is flexible and always built around what the leader actually needs.

How is this different from traditional executive coaching?

Most executive coaching is delivered by professional coaches. Ignite is delivered by a CA(SA) who has spent a career leading and advising businesses. The coaching is grounded in commercial reality and honest experience, not frameworks and methodologies. It is also more direct. If a belief is limiting you, I will say so clearly.

Is this confidential?

Completely. Everything discussed in an Ignite engagement stays between Barend and the leader. There are no reports, no summaries shared with boards or employers, and no third-party involvement unless the leader specifically requests it.

How long does an engagement last?

There is no fixed minimum or maximum. Some leaders engage for six months, others for years. The engagement continues for as long as it is producing value. It ends when the leader decides it has done its work, not when a programme schedule says it should.

Can this run alongside other engagements like a Virtual CFO or strategy work?

Yes, and it often does. Many of Barend's clients work with him across more than one service. The Ignite coaching and the commercial advisory work naturally together because both are ultimately about helping the leader and the business perform at their best.
